Sonia Frojen to lead our October 12th Shanty Sing!!!

Sonia Frojen came to Port Townsend through her job as a deckhand aboard Schooner Adventuress.  A 2 year stint in the San Juan Islands as a kayak guide, a sail down the coast into Baja aboard a private yacht, a short (year-long) stop in Sausalito as a canvas worker, and now School Program Coordinator and Licensed Captain at the Northwest Maritime Center are all experiences that have brought her to live and explore in Port Townsend year-round.  She and her dog Bella can be found on the various local beaches finding treasures and watching the passing scene...

Helen Gilbert to lead our August 10th Shanty Sing!!!

Helen hails from England where she developed a strong passion for the music of her ancestors...many of whom were miners, mariners and farm laborers...She particularly enjoys lending her accented vocals to stories of longing and hard times.

Helen has been an active member of the maritime singing community of the Pacific Northwest since settling here several years ago. In addition to being one of the founders of the Port Townsend Shanty Sing, she founded the monthly Seattle Pub Sing, is a frequent leader of the Northwest Seaport Chanty Sing, and is a regular performer at Northwest Folklife. She helped produce the book “Sing Shanties & Songs About the Sea” in remembrance of local Shantyman Steve Lewis and his extensive collection of Shanties and Maritime songs. She is a board member of the Maritime Folknet (http://maritimefolknet.org/board/) 

Helen is a member of the very popular Seattle band The Drunken Maidens, who will be performing at the Port Gamble Maritime Music Festival on Aug 13th (http://www.thedrunkenmaidens.com/the-maidens.html).

Cap'n Matt Moeller to lead the June 8th Shanty Sing!!!

Matthew Moeller (aka Cap’n Matt), sailor, chantyman, songwriter and writer, is a  third generation resident of the Salish Sea region. Widely known as a singer and folk musician, he is semi-retired from performing and lives in Olympia, WA with his his wife, the Lovely Lanita, and Zoe – The Cat.
