Helen Gilbert to lead our August 10th Shanty Sing!!!

Helen hails from England where she developed a strong passion for the music of her ancestors...many of whom were miners, mariners and farm laborers...She particularly enjoys lending her accented vocals to stories of longing and hard times.

Helen has been an active member of the maritime singing community of the Pacific Northwest since settling here several years ago. In addition to being one of the founders of the Port Townsend Shanty Sing, she founded the monthly Seattle Pub Sing, is a frequent leader of the Northwest Seaport Chanty Sing, and is a regular performer at Northwest Folklife. She helped produce the book “Sing Shanties & Songs About the Sea” in remembrance of local Shantyman Steve Lewis and his extensive collection of Shanties and Maritime songs. She is a board member of the Maritime Folknet (http://maritimefolknet.org/board/

Helen is a member of the very popular Seattle band The Drunken Maidens, who will be performing at the Port Gamble Maritime Music Festival on Aug 13th (http://www.thedrunkenmaidens.com/the-maidens.html).

Photos from our June 8th sing

Some photies from our last shanty sing, led by Cap'n Matt Moeller and Tugboat Bromberg. We were all delighted when Hank Cramer showed up and sung us a few songs. We had a great time that evening with a bunch of first rate performers entertaining us!

JW Sparrow to lead the July 13th Shanty Sing!!!

JW is a firm favorite with our regular shanty songsters, and is back again to entertain us in his own inimitable style.

There is a lot of information about JW Sparrow in our blog post from September 12, 2013, when John led his first Sea Shanties Song Circle here in Port Townsend. Be sure to save the date and help us spread the word - invite your family and friends!
